National Endowment for the Arts
The NEA's Summer Schools in the Arts program supports rigorous, challenging summer arts education programs that enable children and youth to acquire knowledge and skills in the arts as well as gain lifelong interest in the arts and culture.
ELIGIBILITY: State governments; county governments; city or township governments; special district governments; independent school districts; public and state controlled institutions of higher education; Federally recognized Native American tribal governments; nonprofits (other than institutions of higher education) having 501(c)(3) status with the IRS; and private institutions of higher education are eligible to apply.
FUNDING: The estimated total program funding is not currently available, but the minimum grant will be $15,000 and the maximum grant will be $35,000.

Economic Development Assistance Programs
The Economic Development Administration (EDA) is soliciting proposals for the following programs: Grants for Public Works and Economic Development Facilities; Economic Development - Support for Planning Organizations; Economic Development - Technical Assistance; Economic Adjustment Assistance; and Economic Development - Trade Adjustment Assistance. EDA's mission is to promote innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy. EDA invests in the following: public works, infrastructure and development facilities; the crafting and implementation of comprehensive economic development strategies; local, national and university center-based technical assistance programs; and revolving loan funds.
ELIGIBILITY: Eligible applicants for and eligible recipients of EDA financial assistance include Economic Development Districts; Indian tribes or consortia of Indian tribes; states; cities or other political subdivisions; institutions of higher education or consortia of institutions of higher education; public or private nonprofit organizations or associations acting in cooperation with officials of a political subdivision of a state.
FUNDING: Funds in the amount of $253,984,652 have been appropriated for Fiscal Year 2005 and shall remain available until expended. Generally, the amount of the EDA grant may not exceed 50 percent of the cost of the project.

Early Reading First Program
The Early Reading First Program supports local efforts to enhance the oral language, cognitive, and early reading skills of preschool-age children, especially those from low-income families, through strategies, materials, and professional development that are grounded in scientifically-based reading research.
ELIGIBILITY: a) One or more local educational agencies (LEAs) that are eligible to receive a subgrant under the Reading First program; b) one or more public or private organizations or agencies, (including faith-based organizations) located in a community served by an eligible LEA; or c) one or more eligible LEAs, applying in collaboration with one or more eligible organizations or agencies. To qualify under b), the organization's or agency's application must be on behalf of one or more programs that serve preschool-age children (such as a Head Start program, a child care program, or a family literacy program such as Even Start, or a lab school at a university), unless the organization or agency itself operates a preschool program.
FUNDING: $104,160,000 in total funding is estimated to be available, with awards ranging from $750,000 to $4,500,000. It is estimated that the number of awards will be 23 to 139.

National Technical Assistance
The Economic Development Administration (EDA) is soliciting proposals for the National Technical Assistance Program. This notice also announces general policies and application procedures for grant-based technical assistance investments that aim to increase prosperity by advancing comprehensive, entrepreneurial, and innovation-based economic development efforts.
ELIGIBILITY: Eligible applicants for and eligible recipients of EDA financial assistance include Economic Development Districts; Indian tribes or consortia of Indian tribes; states; cities or other political subdivisions; institutions of higher education or consortia of institutions of higher education; public or private nonprofit organizations or associations acting in cooperation with officials of a political subdivision of a state.

Grants to Reduce Childhood Lead Poisoning
The United States Environmental Protection Agency is soliciting grant proposals from eligible entities to conduct activities to reduce incidences of childhood lead poisoning in vulnerable populations, including projects to 1) address areas with high incidences of elevated blood-lead levels, 2) identify and address areas with high potential for heretorfore undocumented elevated blood-lead levels, 3) develop tools to address unique and challenging issues in lead poisoning prevention, and 4) identify tools that are replicable and scalable for other areas. Activities eligible for funding include outreach and public education, data gathering, monitoring, training, inspections and assessments, demonstrations, and new, innovative approaches for identifying or reducing lead poisoning.
ELIGIBILITY: State governments; public and state controlled institutions of higher education; Federally recognized Native American tribal governments; nonprofits (other than institutions of higher education) having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS; private institutions of higher education; and individuals.

Legal Assistance for Victims Grant Program
The Legal Assistance for Victims Grant Program is intended to increase the availability of legal assistance necessary to provide effective aid to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, or sexual assault who are seeking relief in legal matters arising as a consequence of that abuse or violence.
ELIGIBILITY: The program awards grants to law school legal clinics, legal aid or legal services programs, domestic violence victims' shelters, bar associations, sexual assault programs, private nonprofit entities, including faith-based and community-based organizations, and Indian tribal governments.
FUNDING: 12,500,000 estimated total funding.

Free Private Foundation Grant News
The American Dental Association (ADA) Foundation
The ADA Foundation has established a permanent endowment fund that is dedicated to preventing dental caries and other oral diseases of children. Under this program, competitive grants are awarded to applicants whose oral health promotion programs are designed to improve children’s oral health through community education programs. This oral health promotion grant program aspires to be a catalyst for increasing voluntary efforts by the dental health community.
ELIGIBILITY: Community-based, not-for-profit, oral health promotion programs. Oral health promotion programs include: dental health education conducted at schools, health fairs, social agencies, mobile dental clinics or outreach programs; dental health education programs in conjunction with fluoride programs, dental sealant programs, and/or other preventions; oral health and nutrition education materials prepared for children, their parents and/or dental professionals; instruction in the proper use of oral care products; and development of public service announcements to create awareness and appreciation of proper oral care for children.

Jordan Fundamentals Program
The Jordan Fundamentals Grant Program recognizes outstanding teaching and instructional creativity in public secondary schools that serve economically disadvantaged students. The program is presented by the Jordan Brand, a division of Nike, Inc. and administered by Scholarship America. Applicants must develop an original lesson plan or thematic unit that demonstrates high expectations for students. Grants must be used for resource materials, supplies, equipment, transportation, or costs related to field trips, software, and other items required to implement and assess the proposed lesson or thematic unit.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be public school teachers or paraprofessionals working with students in grades one through twelve and be employed by an accredited public school where at least 50 percent of the school’s student population is eligible for the free or reduced school lunch program.
FUNDING: Up to 400 grants of $2,500 will be awarded each year. Two hundred grants will be awarded in grades one through six, and 200 grants will be awarded in grades seven through twelve.

ING
Presented by financial services company ING and managed by Scholarship America, the Unsung Heroes awards program recognizes kindergarten through 12th grade educators for their innovative teaching methods, creative educational projects, and ability to make a positive influence on the children they teach. All awards must be used to further the projects with the recipient’s school or school system.
ELIGIBILITY: All K-12 education professionals are eligible for the program. These individuals must be employed by an accredited K-12 public or private school, and must be full-time educators, teachers, principals, paraprofessionals, or classified staff with projects that improve student learning.
FUNDING: Each of the one hundred finalists will receive an award of $2,000. Of the one hundred finalists, three will be selected for additional financial awards of $5,000, $10,000 and $25,000.

Domestic Grants Program
Mattel and the Mattel Children's Foundation have announced the launch of a new Domestic Grants Program. Two types of grants will be considered: program-specific grants, which provide funding for the launch of new programs or expansion of existing programs, and core operating support, which provides support to organizations to sustain their programs. Funding priority is given to organizations or programs that creatively address a locally defined need directly impacting children in need and that align with Mattel's philanthropic priorities, which include health, education and girls' empowerment.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicant organizations must have 501(c)(3) public charity status.
FUNDING: Grant awards will range between $5,000 and $25,000, depending on program, organization and individual community need.

American Greenways Awards
The Kodak American Greenways Awards Program, a partnership of the Eastman Kodak Company, The Conservation Fund, and the National Geographic Society, provides small grants to stimulate the planning and design of greenways in communities throughout America. Grants may be used for activities such as mapping, ecological assessments, surveying, conferences, and design activities; developing brochures, interpretative displays, audio-visual productions, or public opinion surveys; hiring consultants, incorporating land trusts, building a foot bridge, planning a bike path, or other creative projects. In general, grants can be used for all appropriate expenses needed to complete a greenway project, including planning, technical assistance, legal and other costs.
ELIGIBILITY: Local, regional or statewide nonprofit organizations may apply. Public agencies are eligible to apply, although community organizations will receive preference.
FUNDING: Grants up to $2,500 are available; most grants range from $500 to $1,500.

Wilderness Stewardship Challenge Grant
The National Forest Foundation (NFF) engages Americans in community-based and national programs that promote the health and public enjoyment of the National Forest System. The NFF funds action-oriented projects that enhance the viability of natural resources while considering the benefits to, and the involvement of, surrounding communities. Projects will address NFF's four programmatic priorities - community-based forest stewardship, watershed health and restoration, wildlife habitat improvement, and recreation.
ELIGIBILITY: Community-based nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, Resource Conservation and Development Districts, Native American tribes and educational institutions, especially those with a focus on wilderness areas, are eligible to apply. State and county governments are also eligible, provided that their matching funds are not federally sourced.

Partnership for a Nation of Learners Community Collaboration Grants
The Institute, in conjunction with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, has released guidelines for the Partnership for a Nation of Learners Community Collaboration Grants, which are designed to support new and existing lifelong learning collaborations between museums, libraries, and public broadcasters. These grants are intended to strengthen the ability of museums, libraries, and public broadcasting licensees to work together to help audiences gain knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors, and resources that enhance their engagement in community, work, family, and society. The program funds ongoing or new collaborative activities and projects among museums, libraries, and public broadcasting licensees that are designed to address community civic and educational needs, increase the organizations' capacity to serve as effective venues and resources for learning, or enhance infrastructure and technology in order to serve audiences more effectively.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be either a unit of state or local government or a private nonprofit organization that has tax-exempt status under the IRS Code.
FUNDING: Grants will range from $25,000 and $250,000.

Quality of Life Grants
The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation is committed to funding research that develops treatments and cures for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury and other central nervous system disorders. The foundation also works to improve the quality of life for people living with disabilities through its grants program, paralysis resource center, and advocacy efforts. Two types of grants are offered, one that supports nonprofit organizations that address the needs of persons living with spinal cord injuries, their families, and caregivers, and one that offers health promotion awards to nonprofit organizations that address paralysis caused by spinal cord injuries and various other injuries, diseases, and birth defects.
ELIGIBILITY: Nonprofit organizations that have received tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code and are not private foundations.
FUNDING: The foundation has provided $5.6 million in grants since 1999, with grants awarded in amounts up to $25,000.

Youth Nutrition and Fitness Grants
The General Mills Foundation and the American Dietetic Association Foundation are partnering to improve youth nutrition and fitness through the General Mills Champion Program. The initiative consists of grants to community-based groups, with the goal of encouraging communities to improve the eating and physical activity patterns of young people, ages 2-20.
ELIGIBILITY: Grants will be awarded to 501(c)(3) and 509(a) not-for profit organizations, health departments, government agencies, schools and school districts, and Native American tribes working with communities that demonstrate the greatest need and likelihood of sustainable impact on young people's nutrition and activity levels.
FUNDING: The Foundation will award fifty $10,000 grants.

Clean Water Grant Program
The BoatU.S. Foundation, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting safe and environmentally sensitive boating, is accepting applications for its 2005 Clean Water Grant Program. The 2005 "focus topic" is reducing the spread of aquatic nuisance species. All applications that educate boaters about reducing their impact on the environment while boating will be considered, but applications with a majority of the project devoted to the focus group will be given preferential treatment. BoatU.S. Foundation Clean Water Grants are designed to help educate boaters on issues such as petroleum pollution prevention, pumpout education, littering prevention, and other clean boating topics.

Unlimited Potential
Microsoft Corp.
Microsoft Corp. has announced the launch of Unlimited Potential (UP), a global initiative focused on providing technology skills for disadvantaged individuals through community-based technology and learning centers (CTLCs).
ELIGIBILITY: Microsoft will consider the following CTLC organizational types eligible for funding: nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status; school-based (a nonprofit or governmental organization that provides services to the community during non-school hours such as evenings and weekends); and government funded and operated CTLCs.
FUNDING: Microsoft will grant more than $1 billion to this initiative over the next 5 years.
